How YouTube hashtags actually work

Hashtags on YouTube do two things: the first three in your description become clickable links above the video title (the hyperlinks in YouTube's blue text), and all of them feed YouTube's recommendation engine signals about the topic. They don't help with search the way YouTube tags (the metadata field in Studio) do — but they do help with related-video placement and the "trending in this hashtag" feed.

Three categories, mix all three

  • Broad (1–3 of these) — high-volume tags like #tech or #gaming. Compete with millions of videos but cast the widest net.
  • Niche (4–6 of these) — specific to your video's exact topic. Lower volume but viewers searching them are qualified, e.g. #nextjs15, #marathonprep.
  • Branded (1–3 of these) — products or companies mentioned in your video. Important if your content reviews, compares, or critiques specific brands.

The 15-hashtag cap

YouTube's policy: more than 15 hashtags and the entire set is ignored — the algorithm treats it as spam. Our generator returns at most 20 candidates so you can pick the best 10–12; never paste all of them.

FAQ

How many hashtags should I add to a YouTube video?
YouTube only counts the first three hashtags in the description for the clickable link above the title. After that, additional hashtags help with discovery. Most successful videos use 5–10 in total.
What's the difference between broad, niche, and branded hashtags?
Broad hashtags target large topics for reach (#tech, #fitness). Niche hashtags target specific subtopics for relevance (#nextjs15, #marathonprep). Branded hashtags are product or company names (#nvidia, #apple). A good mix gets you both reach and intent.
Where do YouTube hashtags appear?
The first three hashtags in your description show as clickable links above your video's title. Other hashtags don't display but still help YouTube understand the video's topic for recommendations.
Can I use too many hashtags on YouTube?
Yes. YouTube ignores videos with more than 15 hashtags entirely — they're treated as spam. Stay under 15 to be safe; 5–10 is the sweet spot.
